Neil Armstrong

Neil Alden Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930. He is a former astronaut, test pilot, college professor, and naval aviator. He was the first person to walk on the surface of the Moon.
Prior to that historic event, Armstrong flew aboard Gemini 8 in 1966 as the command pilot. It was on this mission that he and fellow astronaut David Scott preformed the first successful docking of two manned spacecraft. After that, Armstrong served as mission commander of Apollo 11, and it is for this historic mission that he is best remembered.
Apollo 11 was Armstrong's final spaceflight, but it would not be easily forgotten by anyone. On this famous mission, Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the moon. As he stepped onto the lunar surface, he made his famous "giant leap for mankind" remark. During this mission, Armstrong and fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin spent a total of 2.5 hours on the lunar surface before returning to the command module for the long voyage home.
